Making the transition from learning how to read with phonics to comprehending what is being read is not always an easy step. WordBuild Elements helps students make that transition by teaching them how to break down new terms. This program goes beyond standard memorization by teaching students the 93 most commonly used Greek and Latin roots in our language. Elements teaches students to combine those roots with their knowledge of prefixes and suffixes to unlock the meanings of unfamiliar words. The weekly lessons in the student activity book are based on root families and encourage cross-curricular connections. Elements 1 covers 25 Latin and Greek root families including roots such as log, fer, reg, dic, ten, ven, fin, scrib, and more. Lessons are designed to be fun and engaging and include activities like fill-in-the-blank stair steps and magic square type activities. Students will learn how English words are built and discover strategies to determine pieces of meaning embedded in words.

The teacher’s guide provides a day-by-day guide to teaching each lesson as well as assessments and blackline masters. Elements teacher’s guides provide an advance preparation section that reviews important prefixes and suffixes. Objectives and materials needed for the lesson are listed at the outset with a unit at a glance chart that quickly illustrates what’s being taught on what day. Each day’s lesson includes teaching instructions, with classroom direction, scripted questions, discussion guidance, and model lessons for teaching the roots and affixes. Included weekly, semester, and year-end tests are provided. Reduced-size student pages with the answers overlaid, word lists, and assessment answers are also included.

The Dynamic Literacy WordBuild Series is a five-year program that’s comprised of two series and can be used at any point from grades 3-12. This Elements Level 1 curriculum is the first year of the second (3-year) series and is designed for students who have mastered phonics and are exposed to academic text in various content areas. Lessons take only 15 minutes per day and can be used as a regular course or for intervention, EEL, and after-school activities. For on-track students, this course is recommended for grades 5-10; for struggling students, grades 7-12.
