Description

When Ethelred was young, his mother stood behind him as the archbishop anointed him with holy oil. Ethelred’s shoulders and hands were blessed with this oil. He was then given a heavy sword and a golden crown was placed upon his head. The crown was too big for him and it fell over his eyes, causing Ethelred to nearly drop the sword on the archbishop’s foot. It may seem surprising that Ethelred became king at the age of ten.
