In the early 1900s, the Greenwood District in Tulsa, Oklahoma was a thriving commercial center for African Americans. It was known as Negro Wall Street and was nationally recognized. However, in 1921, white rioters destroyed much of the district due to jealousy, land disputes, and racism. Despite this devastation, the community recovered and reached new heights in the 1940s. Over time, social and economic changes caused the district to decline, but today it is part of a larger cultural and educational hub in downtown Tulsa.
