Blackbeard’s early life is mostly unknown, but he is believed to have started as Edward Teach in Bristol, England. He began his career as a sailor during Queen Anne’s War. Eventually, he settled in the Bahamas under Captain Benjamin Hornigold, who taught him to become a pirate. Blackbeard quickly became a captain himself and started stealing ships in the Caribbean and along the Eastern seaboard. He was famous for his thick black beard and terrifying reputation. The legend of Blackbeard has influenced pirate stories for more than 300 years.
